Computer screens emit bluish light when they are turned on. While this bluish light looks good during daytime, it is not comfortable to look at in dark rooms or low light rooms.
Researchers say that the bluish light of computer screen can also affect your sleep. There is a free software called F.lux to automatically change the color temperature of your computer screen based on the time of the day. The tool automatically sets a warmer color at sunset to make it easier on your eyes and help you sleep better.
Starting with Creators Update for Windows 10 (version 1703), a similar feature is present in Windows 10 to automatically change the color temperature of the screen based on the time of the day. The new feature is called Night light in Windows 10.
The Night light offers two options to automatically turn on and off Night light mode: manual timings and sunset to sunrise. When you use sunset to sunrise option, Windows 10 automatically sets warmer screen light at sunset (uses your location to check the sunset and sunrise timings) and turns off the Night light mode at sunrise.
Here is how to automatically turn on and off the Night light mode in Windows 10.
NOTE: You must be running version 1703 or above to use this feature.
Method 1 of 2
Automatically turn on and off Night light (manual timings)
Turn on Night light at sunset and turn off at sunrise
Turn on Night light at sunset and turn off at sunrise
Step 1: Open Settings app. Navigate to System > Display.
Step 2: In Brightness and color section, click Night light settings link to open the settings page for Night light feature.
Step 3: As you can see in pictures, the Night light settings page allows you choose the color temperature for the Night light mode, schedule Night light.
Turn on Schedule Night light option. Choose Set hours option.
Step 4: Select a time to automatically turn on the Night light feature and also select a time to automatically turn off the Night light feature every day. That’s all!
Method 2 of 2
This is the best way to automatically turn on and off the Night light feature. The sunset to sunrise method automatically turns the Night light feature once the sunset happens and turn on the feature at sunrise.
The feature uses your location, so you have to keep the location service turned on to use this method.
Step 1: Navigate to Settings app > System > Display.
Step 2: In Brightness and color section, click the Night light settings link.
Step 3: Here, under Schedule section, turn on the Schedule Night light option. And if you are seeing “Turn on location services to schedule Night light at sunset” message, please click Location settings link (shows just below the message, click Change button, and then click move the slide to on position) to turn on the location service. As said before, the feature requires location service.
Step 4: Choose Sunset to sunrise option. That’s it! From now on, Windows 10 will automatically turn on at sunset and turn off the feature at sunrise.
Tip: If you find the default color of night mode too warm, navigate to Settings app > System > Display > Night light mode settings > and then move the color temperature slider to set a less warm light.
