How do I download my LinkedIn Profile and Data?

I’ve been on LinkedIn for years and realized that if they kicked me out, I have no backup of contacts, messages, even what I’ve posted. How can I download an archival copy of my LinkedIn profile?
As recently as a few years ago, LinkedIn was somewhat of a black hole – as were sites like Twitter and Facebook – where you could post and interact as much as you wanted, but you could never download anything at all. Well, LinkedIn let you download your own profile information as a PDF in resume form [Download your LinkedIn Profile in Resume Format] but that was about it. There was even a name for this back in the day: people used to refer to Facebook as the “walled garden” due to this black hole effect.
In the last few years, data portability and us users gaining access to our own data and usage, logs and connections, has become a lot more important and now you can obtain lots of data from a wide variety of different social media sites. Including LinkedIn. These data files can be quite large, however, but it’s probably a good idea to have a backup copy just in case, right? You probably won’t get kicked off LI without warning, but still, let’s go through the steps required…
To start, log in to LinkedIn and go to Settings & Privacy from the main menu:
linkedin menu - settings & privacy

Choose that and you’ll see quite a few different settings, preferences and options for your LinkedIn account. You want to click on the “Privacy” tab along the top, then look for the second option, “Download your data”. See it?
linkedin settings & privacy

To access that feature, you need to click or tap on “Change” on the right edge.
linkedin download your data

As you can see above, there are two choices for downloading your data: you can download everything, “the works” (why does it suddenly sound like a carwash?) or you can pick and choose specific data subsets including your connections, invitations, recommendations, and even rich media. If you only want one snippet of the data, that’s going to be faster and smaller. Me? I’m going for The Works and probably will get a wax afterwards too!
Choose the option you prefer. Either way, the button changes to:
download all my data, linkedin

Click on Request archive — and if you also specify The Works then you’ll also have a 24-hour delay — and you’ll be prompted for your account password again:
confirm linkedin download - password

This is a good thing because otherwise, you could log in to a public computer or even a colleague’s system and someone else could grab your entire profile and all connections without you ever affirming that it’s okay. Enter your password again, however, and you’re ready to wait for that email…
linkedin: preparing data download profile account

That’s about it. You can go back to your regularly scheduled activities and eventually you’ll get some email, starting with this message:
linkedin data backup profile account download ready email

So that’s the process. Not too bad once you know it exists and where to find it. Now download your own data for safe keeping and you’ll be able to sleep well at night again.

Apple will let users run iOS apps on macOS

Apple is making it easier for mobile developers to port their iOS apps to the next-generation macOS Mojave desktop platform—a major step in bringing the two platforms closer together.

However, at the same time, the company straightforward denied the idea of merging the iPhone and Mac operating systems into one platform, which was being speculated for years. So, Apple made it clear that iOS and macOS will continue to be separate products.

Rumors of iOS apps coming to the Mac have been around since 2017, and yesterday at Apple's WWDC 2018 event, Apple senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi just confirmed this while concluding his keynote.

Though iOS and macOS share similar underlying frameworks, both are separate operating systems with their own separate software libraries, called UIKit used by iOS and AppKit used by macOS, which have made porting iOS apps to Mac difficult, said Federighi.

"iOS devices and macOS devices of course are different," Federighi said. "That makes porting an app from one to the other some work. We wanted to make that much easier. We've taken some key frameworks from iOS and brought them to the Mac."

To address this issue, Apple is incorporating part of UIKit into macOS and starting the process with its own iOS apps first, though the biggest challenge is that the iOS apps need to be optimized for traditional computer inputs, including:

  • Mouse and trackpad input
  • App window stoplights
  • Scroll-bars
  • Resizable windows
  • Copy-and-paste
  • Drag and drop

But since this is a multi-year project, Federighi stressed that porting iOS apps to the macOS desktop environment will not happen overnight, adding the first iOS apps to be available for macOS will be made by Apple later this year.

For now, the macOS Mojave software will include 4 iOS apps—Home, Stocks, News and Voice Memo—Apple itself brought from its iOS mobile platform to macOS.

Federighi said that "there are millions of iOS apps out there," and "we think some of them would look great on the Mac." But that will change in 2019 when this feature will be made available to the third-party app developers.

Facebook unveils Musical.ly competitor called Lip Sync Live

Facebook has announced two big changes regarding the way music can be used on the platform. Users will now be able to include music within personal videos and choose from a variety of songs for a new feature called Lip Sync Live.
As of March 9th, Facebook had clinched music licensing deals with all three major labels, and now users will begin to take advantage of that. The company is testing out options to let people include music from these catalogs (which includes millions of titles) within their personal videos. It plans on rolling out this capacity on a global level, although no exact time frame has been given.
Facebook has also introduced a new feature called Lip Sync Live, an idea reminiscent of what popular apps like Musical.ly or Dubsmash have already done (and dominated). Facebook is testing this in select markets for now, and the pool of songs available is in the hundreds, including popular titles like “Havana” by Camila Cabello and “God’s Plan” by Drake. Lip Sync Live also has a “With” option, so friends can be brought into the video, and camera effects can be used to add different backgrounds and other creative touches.
If Lip Sync Live is available for you, it will appear as an option when starting a Live video. You can then select a song from the list, and add a description and further customizations. When broadcasting, friends will see what artist and song you’re lip-syncing to, and they can tap to follow the artist on Facebook.
Facebook says more music integrations are forthcoming, like testing the ability to add music to Facebook Stories.

Wireless Router Security Features You Should Turn On

Your home Internet router has a lot of security features under its hood that you might not be using. You paid a lot for that box with all those blinking lights on it, which is why you should make sure you’re taking advantage of all the security it has to offer you.
Depending on how old your router is, it may offer you more or fewer security features. You might need to upgrade its firmware to ensure you have access to all the latest bells and whistles offered by your router manufacturer. If your router is really old, it might be too old to be “secure” anymore and it may be time for an upgrade.
Let’s take a look at 6 router security features that you should consider turning on right now.

1. WPA2 Encryption

Do you leave your doors and windows open and unlocked at night? If you aren’t using WPA2 encryption (or a more current standard) on your wireless router or access point, then you might as well not even have a door because you’re letting hackers and everyone else into your home via your wireless network.
This means not only do they have a connection to your network and possibly its shared resources, but they are also likely leeching off of the Internet connection that you are paying for. Check out these Tips For Securing Your Wireless Network.

2. Guest Network Access

Do you have visitors that need access to the Internet but you’re not to keen on giving them your wireless password because you don’t want them having access to the rest of your network resources and you don’t want to have to change the password on all your devices when they leave?
Turning on your router’s Guest Network feature might be just what the doctor ordered. If your router has this feature, consider using it to provide temporary Internet access for your visitors. It can be turned on and off at will, which is nice when you have visiting kids who shouldn’t be on the Internet after bedtime. You can shut it off for them while you still stay connected.

3. Built-in Firewall

Your router may feature a built-in firewall that you might not even know it had. This can be a great tool for allowing or denying traffic originating from the Internet, preventing it from reaching your computer. You can also use it to control what traffic leaves your network as well.
Check out our guide on Why You Need a Firewall and also read Best Practices for Firewall Configuration for information on how to set it up. When you're ready to test it to see if it works, check out How to Test a Firewall.

4. Enhanced Parental Controls

Many newer routers now offer advanced parental controls such as content filtering DNS. Routers like the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 have integrated with content filtering providers such as OpenDNS to offer malware, phishing, and adult content filtering.

5. Time-Based Access Restrictions

When you go to bed you make sure you lock all your doors to your residence, don’t you? What about your Internet connection? Many people leave it connected all day and all night. What if you could automatically have your Internet connection shut off every night to prevent hackers from connecting to your internal network via the Internet or prevent your kids from late-night browsing activities?
Most routers now offer time-based access restrictions that basically sever your network connection at whatever time you choose so that no Internet-based shenanigans can take place in the wee hours of the morning when everyone in your house should be sleeping.

6. VPN at the Router

If you haven’t heard of Personal VPN services and how they can help secure your data, check out our article: Why You Need a Personal VPN. Some routers let you set this feature up at the router-level which allows you secure all the devices on your network without the hassle of having to configure each device to use the VPN. Set it up at the router level and all network traffic going in and out of your network will be protected from prying eyes by encryption.

Intel Announces Limited Edition Core i7-8086K, New 28-Core CPU

As rumored earlier this week, Intel has announced a new, limited edition Coffee Lake CPU: The Core i7-8086K. This new chip will have a 4GHz base clock and 5GHz boost, with six cores, 12 threads, and the same iGPU turbo clock as the rest of the 8th Generation Core i7 family (1.2GHz).
The new core isn’t just a top-end SKU, however — it’s a limited edition CPU, with just 50,000 parts planned at this point. Intel isn’t revealing all of the turbo frequencies, but we’ve seen speculation online that the chip will have a 4.6GHz all-core turbo frequency. If true, this would work out to a 300MHz clock jump across the board compared with the Core i7-8700K’s 3.7GHz base, 4.3GHz all-core turbo, and 4.7GHz single-core boost. (The performance gains at each clock frequency come out to 1.08x, 1.07x, and 1.06x at the base, all-core, and max respectively).
Pricing is currently unclear as well. Intel is actually planning to auction 8,086 of these CPUs on a sweepstakes site (you can sign up here starting on Thursday, June 7, at 5 PM EDT). The listed approximate value from the sweepstakes page is $425, but with so few of these CPUs being produced at all, it’s not clear if we’ll ever see the chips for sale on any channel site. They may be reserved for OEMs and boutique system builders instead of being made more generally available.
Intel’s 28-Corestrocity
Intel’s other major Computex 2018 demo was a 5GHz 28-core unannounced CPU shown tearing through Cinebench in what PCWorld describes as “a few seconds.” With its supposed 5GHz clock speed, it certainly would — but Intel isn’t announcing anything about the chip, including its model number, beyond saying it’s a single-socket system with a 28-core CPU.
Core-Comparison
By comparing Intel’s current top-end, highest-clocked Core X, and Xeon Platinum servers, we can check what kind of TDP we’d really be looking at. Answer: A lot. Moving from 18 cores to 28 cores pushes TDP up 1.24x, even though the Xeon gives up 10 percent of its top-end clock rate. Raising the boost clock as high as 5GHz suggests one of two things: Either Intel is going to create a server chip with a very limited boost clock, like 5GHz on a single core, or it’s going to pull an AMD-style FX-9590 and release a Core X or Xeon server part with a dramatically higher TDP. Properly-built motherboards can handle high TDPs and top-end air coolers are, we’ve been told, capable of handling up to a 250W CPU. Cores that generate more heat than that typically require water cooling, but we’ll have to wait and see what Intel has in mind for this new core.
This new chip could also be read as a response to AMD’s Threadripper. Currently, AMD’s strongest position, relative to Intel, is at the $1,000 price point (See on Amazon). While few PC buyers invest in these kinds of systems, the fact is, the Threadripper 7980XE is $1,890 for 18 cores, while Threadripper 1950X is $959 for 16. The Core i9-7900X (See on Amazon) — Intel’s closest-priced competitor to Threadripper — is $921. In the workstation benchmarks where high core count CPUs are relevant, that 16-core AMD CPU beats Intel’s 10-core every time.

It’s possible, however, that Intel could be prepping an aggressive shakeup in its Core X family. Last year, when it launched Core X, Intel also slashed its per-core pricing in half. Previously, a 10-core chip had cost $2,000. With Core X’s debut, that price dropped in half. Were Intel to launch a 28-core chip at $2,000, it could slice its 18-core chip to $1,000. Given that the Core i9-7980XE generally beat AMD’s Threadripper 1950X, that would give Intel a potent $1,000 price point. The company could then adjust its other product stacks accordingly. Whether this new core forms the basis of such a plan or is merely a one-off entry to the product family remains to be seen.

The Asus ROG Phone has a 90Hz screen, overclocked CPU, and vapor cooling

Why it matters: The Asus ROG Phone represents a current push into hardcore mobile gaming started by Razer last year. Will the ridiculous specs entice gamers who might otherwise stick with traditional PC and console gaming?
Razer released a surprisingly competent "gaming-focused" smartphone last year that featured a high refresh screen and loudspeakers. At Computex this week, Asus is trying to one-up the Razer Phone with its own Republic of Gamers branded smartphone aimed squarely at hardcore mobile gamers.
To start off, the ROG Phone maxes out basically every spec you could want on an Android phone:
  • Processor: Overclocked Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (2.96Ghz)
  • Display: 6-inch 2160x1080 OLED screen with 90Hz refresh rate. Includes HDR support
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 128 or 512GB
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Audio: Dual front-facing speakers and a headphone jack
  • Camera: 8MP front-facing camera, Dual 12MP/8MP cameras on the back
Because of the overclocked Snapdragon 845, the ROG Phone features vapor cooling and an attachable fan accessory. However, maximum performance isn't available off the bat. The ROG Phone has a squeeze function, similar to the Pixel 2 and HTC Edge Sense, that activates "X Mode". X Mode transforms the gamer visual aesthetic from blue to red, optimizes the phone for gaming by prioritizing the game in RAM and shuts down background processes.
Of course, no serious mobile gamer will use the touchscreen as their primary mode of input. Asus has created a suite of accessories for the ROG phone. First, is an actual gamepad made by Gamevice that clips on either side of the phone. The gamepad includes the usual physical buttons and analog sticks. The gamepad also works with a WiGig dock to wirelessly stream gameplay to a connected TV.
Next, is a weird clamshell accessory that turns the ROG Phone into a dual screen phone. The second screen is also a 6-inch 1080p panel while also housing a 6,000 mAh battery. It also features front facing quad speakers, shoulder buttons, and more cooling. Asus imagines this could be used for extended gameplay sessions.
For those gamers who prefer more of a desktop setup, Asus is also selling a dock that connects to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to use as an Android desktop. This is similar to Samsung's DeX dock that does the same thing. Unlike the DeX dock however, the Asus dock can also connect to a PC and allow the gamer to switch back and forth between the PC and the ROG Phone.
It's almost like Asus thought what a hardcore PC gamer would want in a gaming PC and transplanted those specs into mobile form. This is probably the most ambitious gaming phone so far and it will be interesting to see if Razer (or any other gaming hardware company) will continue to push the boundary of mobile gaming. The ROG Phone will launch later this year in Q3 2018.

Gigabyte will sell you fake color-changing RAM

Rainbow-colored RGB-lit RAM isn’t new in the world of computing. Companies like Trident have already bravely infused memory sticks with glowing lights going as far back as 2016.
Gigabyte, which announced that it will get into the RAM business at Computex this year, is taking things even further. It’s selling light-up LED-infused RAM that doesn’t even have any RAM in it.
So basically, Gigabyte is selling its new AORUS RGB LED memory as a kit. Two of the sticks are 16GB (2 x 8GB) of DDR4 memory, but the other half of the bundle is two faux-RAM sticks that are made of the same aluminum housing with LEDs that can sync up with the actual RAM sticks. But they have none of the functional memory bits.
The idea is that gamers who are looking to complete their sweet, illuminated gaming rigs won’t be left with empty memory slots on their motherboard bereft of LED lighting in the event that they don’t want to spring for a full 64GB of RAM.
Gigabyte is also exploring the possibility of just selling the dummy sticks separately one day. That means that there is about a 100 percent chance that someone is going to accidentally buy a set of useless RAM to put into their gaming PC. Such are the sacrifices we make for sweet, tricked-out battle stations.
The Aorus RGB LED DDR4 kit will be out sometime in June for $229.

Microsoft drops data center into the sea: 'It will keep working for five years'

Microsoft has dropped a 40-foot long data-center pod onto the seafloor off the coast from the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney, north of Scotland.
That's a fairly remote location, but Microsoft's thinking behind phase two of its data-center-in-the-sea research, Project Natick, is to bring its cloud servers closer to where people live.
Since half the world's population lives within 120 miles of the coast, it thinks offshore data centers could be an efficient, low-latency way of delivering AI applications and gaming content to end users.
Video: Microsoft shows off its Project Natick underwater datacenter. Source: Microsoft/YouTube
Microsoft dropped a slightly smaller 30-foot Natick pod off the coast of California in 2016 to test whether it could run Azure services from the seabed.
Microsoft designed the pod to operate without maintenance for up to five years -- about the time it would take before the servers inside would be retired anyway.
The prepackaged undersea data centers could also cut deployment times from two years to 90 days. Microsoft wanted to test whether its European vessel could make this deadline "from the decision to power on", according to its updated FAQ .
As Project Natick engineers argued in a recent article in IEEE Spectrum, the advantage of shorter deployment times are they that could allow Microsoft to be reactive to demand increased capacity, rather than having to build data centers in anticipation of future demand.
They envision deploying a collection of undersea pods, each with several thousand servers, and adding to them as required.
According to Naval Group, the French defense naval-systems contractor that built Microsoft's pod, the data center has a payload of 12 racks containing 864 servers with a cooling system.
After assembly, it was moved by truck to Scotland, from where it was dragged out to sea on a raft and then carefully lowered 117 feet, 35.6 meters, to a rock slab on the seabed.
Although the data center is built to last five years, it will remain on the seabed for at least a year as Microsoft observes how it fares.
The pod is attached by a cable leading back to the Orkney Islands electricity grid, which supplies 100 percent renewable wind and solar energy to about 10,000 residents. The data center itself needs a quarter of a megawatt.
The Natick team also explained the pod's cooling system and how it uses ocean water to cool liquids inside the system.
"The interior of the data-center pod consists of standard computer racks with attached heat exchangers, which transfer the heat from the air to some liquid, likely ordinary water," they said.
"That liquid is then pumped to heat exchangers on the outside of the pod, which in turn transfer the heat to the surrounding ocean. The cooled transfer liquid then returns to the internal heat exchangers to repeat the cycle."
