WHAT DOES ANDROID “AIRPLANE MODE” DISABLE?

I would like to be able to drop off the grid with my LG running Android when I’m meditating, but still, receive notifications. Can I do that with Airplane Mode?
You’re asking to have your proverbial cake and eat it too: You can’t be “off the grid” and still receive notifications because they are diametrically opposed to each other. Indeed, if you’re meditating, why not just turn the sound off and flip the phone face down? Or actually power down while you’re seeking enlightenment, then power back up again when you’re done?
The difference between these solutions is that turning off the sound (and vibration too, probably) will have notifications trigger as messages and email arrives while powering off your Android LG phone will prevent notifications. Turn it back on, though, and everything will flood in with notifications!
You also ask about Airplane Mode and that’s an interesting solution if you want something approximately in the middle: It’ll take your device completely offline but you won’t have to turn it off and go through the anguish of powering it down. I understand.

Airplane Mode itself is actually designed for situations like being on an airplane when you want to use your phone but have it disconnected and not using any transmitter or receiver circuitry. Then again, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) itself says “airlines usually allow passengers to use newer-model phones in “airplane” mode above 10,000 feet. This mode disables the transmitter so the phone can’t make calls, but lets users play games, check an address or look at the phone’s calendar.”
Want to try it out? You can easily turn on Airplane Mode on your Android phone by going to Settings > Networks, as shown:

When you do turn on Airplane Mode, it’ll actually tell you what’s disabled:

As you can see, you won’t be able to call, send or receive messages, wi-fi is disabled and even Bluetooth is turned off. Look at the dramatic change in the Settings screen when compared to the above:

It will also show you a little airplane on the pull-down shortcut window in Android too, as you can see below:

Heck it also shows a tiny airplane on the very top line throughout your Android experience too:

The airplane that’s taking off on the left side is a reminder that I have an upcoming flight, it’s the overhead view airplane icon by the battery indicator that shows the phone’s in airplane mode. And the lack of signal strength and wifi symbols too, of course.
Now you know how to work with Airplane Mode. Whether it’ll be what you seek for your meditation practice, well, that’s something I would encourage you to test out.
