The medical technology market—one of the fastest growing in the field—is forecastto exceed $500 billion in sales by 2021.
So it’s no wonder scientists, including those at Swansea University’s Institute of Life Science (ILS), are turning their focus to health tech.
Researchers developed what BBC News called “smart bandages,” which can detect how a wound is healing and communicate with doctors. The 5G-powered dressing also monitors what treatment is needed and tracks the wearer’s activity levels.
This project is part of the recent £1.3 billion ($1.6 billion) Swansea Bay City deal, which aims to turn the Welsh city into a 5G test hub.
The next-gen cellular network, which boasts higher speed and capacity and lower latency than existing platforms, is expected for large-scale deployment in 2019. Leaving scientists more than a year to test their intelligent gauze.
“5G is an opportunity to produce resilient, robust bandwidth that is always there for the purpose of healthcare,” ILS Chairman Marc Clement told the BBC.
The smart bandage, loaded with tiny nanotechnology sensors, would connect to a 5G infrastructure through your phone, providing doctors with details like current location and activity levels.
“You combine all of that intelligence so the clinician knows the performance of the specific wound at any specific time and can then tailor the treatment protocol to the individual and wound in question,” Swansea professor Clement said.
Nanotechnology experts will develop the embedded sensors, while ILS plans to 3D print bandages on the cheap. Trials could begin within the next 12 months and will be conducted through Arch (A Regional Collaboration for Health) in Wales.
“What the future holds is a world where there’s the ability to vary the treatment to the individual, the lifestyle, and the pattern of life,” Clement said. “All of the evidence is there before them in this 5G world, so the clinician and patient can work together to address the challenge.”
