Elon Musk’s Neuralink wants to boost the brain to keep up with AI

Serial entrepreneur Elon Musk has a new company — yes, another one — focused on developing the capabilities of the brain through technological augmentation. Neuralink, the new venture, officially broke cover thanks to a Wall Street Journal article today, though it’s been known for some time that Musk was working on brain-computer interface tech as a means to help ensure humans can keep pace with the accelerating development of artificial intelligence.
Musk at Code Conference last year brought up the prospect of a “neural lace” that would be surgically connected to a human brain and allow a user to interact with a computer without the bandwidth challenges that come with current input methods, including keyboards, mice and trackpads. He’s since tweeted that he has made progress on his own exploration of the tech, and more recently rumors emerged that he was planning to found another company with this project as its focus.
Neuralink isn’t going to be focused on upgrading ordinary human brainpower at first, however, according to the WSJ report. Instead, it’ll explore how brain interfaces might alleviate the symptoms of dangerous and chronic medical conditions.
These could include epilepsy and severe depressive disorder, according to the report. These efforts could build on existing therapies that use electrodes in the brain to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s, giving Neuralink a starting point with established science and an easier path to approval for human use. Clearing that lower hurdle would then set up the company for its longer-term goal of human augmentation.
It may sound far-fetched, but in fact this is basically the Musk standard playbook for building new companies based on big ideas. Both SpaceX and Tesla used the same model, starting with near-term products that weren’t nearly as ambitious as later efforts in order to crest a sustainable path to grand designs, like landing on Mars or affordable, mass-produced long-range EVs.
Musk will definitely have a full plate with Neuralink on top of Tesla and SpaceX, as well as his side venture The Boring Company, which is looking into solving urban transportation issues via tunnels. But the CEO sees AI as a risk that could potentially affect humanity at large, and his decision to pursue this potential solution likely seems as imperative to him as does the necessity of expanding our intergalactic colonial footprint, or weaning ourselves off of fossil fuels.

Intel Optane: Memory acceleration kicks PCs into warp drive on April 24

Intel’s Optane Memory could be the most revolutionary letdown in storage history. Announced Monday morning, these first consumer Optane-based devices will be available April 24 in two M.2 trims: A 16GB model for $44 and a 32GB Optane Memory device for $77. Both are rated for crazy-fast read speeds of 1.2GBps and writes of 280MBps.
If you’re wondering how you can install Windows 10 on one of these, you can’t. The first two Optane Memory devices instead are meant to be used primarily as cache drives for a traditional hard drive, using a technique similar to the Smart Response Technology Intel introduced in 2011.
Why this matters: Optane Memory is a far cry from what we expected after Intel and Micron announced 3D XPoint in 2015. The non-volatile memory was hyped as the next fast thing, promising “1,000X” the performance of today’s NAND-based SSDs with far higher density and lower cost than DRAM. 3D XPoint had me wondering just how it would reshape the PC down the road, when a computer could potentially have a simple 4TB of 3D XPoint memory doing it all, rather than 16GB of RAM and a hard drive. Apparently we have to be patient.

Why you shouldn’t dismiss Optane

Anyone who expected the first Optane drives to re-balance the galaxy is likely to be very disappointed with Intel Optane Memory. These first two Optane drives aren’t intended for enthusiasts, nor anyone with a beefy computer. They’re aimed at the huddled masses who still use traditional, spinning-platter hard drives. There are a lot of them: IDC data cited by Intel shows roughly 80 percent of desktop PCs in the world still use hard drives. (Full disclosure: IDC and PCWorld are separate business units of International Data Group.) They’ll continue to do so, too, because the cost per megabyte is so affordable.
Add Optane Memory to a current PC, and drive performance will be exponentially better, Intel claims.

Optane Memory hands-on

Intel let the media try Optane Memory during a recent briefing at the company’s Folsom, California campus. This was a controlled atmosphere: I was not allowed to take photographs or screenshots, and we were closely supervised by Intel staff. Take these observations with a grain of salt.
I booted a NUC PC with a 2.5-inch hard drive to Windows 10, launched the GIMP photo editor, and recorded how long it took to load. I then shut down the NUC and inserted a 32GB Intel Optane Memory drive into the NUC’s M.2 slot. I booted back into Windows and launched GIMP. Then I shut down the NUC and booted back into Windows.
Lather, rinse, repeat. With each duplicate task, the launching speed accelerated. The load time for Gimp, for example, dropped from about 14 seconds to 8 seconds, and then to 3 or 4 seconds as the Optane Memory cached the task.
While Optane Memory’s mission echoes that of Smart Response Technology, it’s a far better implementation. Pairing the drive, or setting it up to cache the hard drive, is truly a snap. You simply fire up the Optane Memory utility, tell it to pair, and you’re done.

Anyone who remembers the original Smart Response Technology can tell you it wasn’t so easy to use and was prone to pairing problems. Like SRT, Intel Optane Memory keeps parts of the OS on the drive to speed up performance. This means if you want to pull the hard drive from the system, you’ll have to unpair it first so you don’t jeopardize your data.
The current Intel Optane Memory implementation is also limited to a single hard drive. If you run two hard drives, the second one will see no caching improvement. Very much like SRT, Intel Optane Memory increases responsiveness overall. Of course, anything is an improvement over a hard drive.

Competing with SSD

When the price of a 128GB SATA SSD is roughly $50 to $60 today, you may rightly wonder why Optane Memory would be worth the bother. Intel says most consumers just don’t want to give up the capacity for their photos and videos. PC configurations with a hard drive and an SSD, while standard for higher-end PC users, aren’t popular among newbies.
Think of the times you’ve had friends or family fill up the boot drive with cat pictures, but the secondary drive is nearly empty. Intel Optane Memory would give that mainstream user the same or better performance as an SSD, with the capacity advantage of the 1TB or 2TB drive they’re used to.
Intel claims Optane Memory performance is as good or better than an SSD’s, offering better latency by magnitudes and the ability to reach peak performance at much lower queue depths. (A queue depth is basically how long it takes the system to access data on the hard drive.) Here’s an Intel slide that shows the traces of several consumer applications in use. You can see all of the action is with a queue depth of one, two, or three at the most.

Intel says the problem with NAND SSD is in its method of increasing performance: Increasing the number of channels nets performance only at very high queue depths that consumers don’t reach.

You probably want the next drive

What we all wanted to know, of course, is whether actual Optane SSDs aimed at consumers would come to market. Intel will only say it’s in the works.
If Intel repeats its previous pattern of offering consumer drives based on its server products, some hints may lie in the launch of the DC P4800X—see the roadmap for Optane SSDs in the lower righthand corner.

One limitation to Optane Memory could be a deal-breaker for many: Intel said Optane Memory will be tied only to Kaby Lake CPUs, and not just the associated 200-series chipsets. That means, for example, if you have a Z270 motherboard with a Skylake Core i7-6700K in it, it won’t work. Intel said it wanted to limit the validation work it had to do. We’d also guess that by limiting it to Kaby Lake, Intel gets to eliminate supporting Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

Optane Memory’s first step

When something is hyped up as “1,000X” of anything, people have expectations. The speed booster announced today falls short of the full-on SSD killer performance enthusiasts were hoping for. All Intel says, though, is wait and see: Storage VP Rob Cooke described this first roll out of Optane as an “exciting moment in time” that would become the new normal.
Cooke actually compared Optane’s launch to the changes the steam engine, electricity, space travel, the PC and the Internet brought to the world. “I believe you will look back in time 10 years from now and say ‘I was there.’”
We’ll see.

Facebook finally tests a GIF button for comments

After years of stubborn caution, Facebook is finally embracing the animated GIF. Next week Facebook will begin testing a GIF button that lets users post GIFs from services like Giphy and Tenor as comments, a source told TechCrunch. We inquired with Facebook, which confirmed the GIF test is coming with this statement:
“Everyone loves a good GIF and we know that people want to be able to use them in comments. So we’re about to start testing the ability to add GIFs to comments and we’ll share more when we can, but for now we repeat that this is just a test.”
At first this GIF comment button will only be available to a small percentage of Facebook users, but it could roll out to everyone if it proves popular. It will work similarly to the GIF button in Facebook Messenger, allowing users to both browse trending GIFs and search for specific reactions in-line. Users still won’t have the ability to select and share GIFs as News Feed posts, but comment GIFs could lay the groundwork for that.

Facebook has long shirked the animated image medium. The rationale was that allowing flashy, eye-catching GIFs might distract from the rest of the News Feed experience. Facebook has even reportedly had support for GIFs built for years, but delayed rolling it out for fear of disrupting the feed aesthetic.
That was before Facebook News Feeds filled up with auto-play video. Eventually Facebook permitted News Feed sharing with the direct URL of a GIF file, but that meant users had to search for them on sites like Imgur or Tumblr, or host them themselves. Then Facebook only allowed Pages and ads to share GIFs. There was still no GIF browser and no uploading by users allowed.
And all the while, Facebook’s feed downranked “low-quality memes,” which could include ‘image macros’ made up of a GIF + overlaid text. Messenger added GIF sharing back in 2015, but the main Facebook app still didn’t play nice with the format.
This anti-GIF orthodoxy eventually began to hold Facebook back. Fellow content-browsing site Imgur has ridden GIF sharing to 150 million users, and BuzzFeed’s GIF listicles have been some of the most popular links leading people away from Facebook.

But now Facebook is diving headfirst into visual communication, following Snapchat’s lead as social media usage evolves from text statuses to rich media. Most of that focus has been on video. However, Facebook sees flexibility as crucial to keeping users from straying to other broadcast channels.
If the test is well received, Facebook comment reels might soon be filled with ‘reaction GIFs’. These typically use a clip of a movie, television show, or cartoon to express the emotion of the user, from excitement to concern.
And eventually, Facebook might loosen up and add a GIF button to the News Feed composer. After all, GIFs are just the best moments of video played on loop, and Facebook says video is its future.

10 powerful, obscure Windows keyboard shortcuts you should know

We’re big fans of keyboard shortcuts. Memorizing key combinations takes some work, but once you have, shortcuts make using an operating system so much more efficient.
Many people know the everyday keyboard shortcuts, such as how to copy, cut, and paste text with the keyboard, how to close a window, and how to lock a PC.
That’s a solid start—but there are even more powerful keyboard shortcuts lurking beyond the basics. Here are some of our favorite less commonly used shortcuts. We’ve grouped these by operating system to make it easier for users of Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 to see what’s available for their system.

Windows 7 and up

  1. F2: Prepare selected file for renaming—no more careful clicking.
  2. Alt + Enter: Select a file and then use this shortcut to display its properties
  3. Windows Key + M: Minimize all windows to the taskbar (Windows Key + Shift + M restores them).
  4. Windows Key + Home: Minimize everything but the active window
  5. Windows Key + Pause: Display the system properties dialog box
  6. Windows key + Shift + right or left arrow: Move the active window to the next monitor in the direction indicated
  7. Ctrl + Y: Redo an action (the opposite of Ctrl + Z)

Windows 8.1 and up

  1. Windows Key + comma key: Peek at the desktop

Windows 10 only

  1. Windows key + Alt + D: Display the time and calendar panel (equivalent of clicking the time on the taskbar)
  2. Windows key + Tab: Open task view. Remember Task View? It’s how you create virtual desktops in Windows 10. A handy feature for people who like to multitask.

ISPs Can Now Sell Your Web Browsing History Without Your Permission, US Senate Votes

The US Senate has voted to discard the broadband privacy rules that would have forced the ISPs to seek consumers’ permission before selling their personal and web browsing data. The Senate, with Republican Majority, voted 50-48 and made sure that FCC will be prevented from issuing similar rulings in future. The House, also with the Republican Majority, needs to vote (Trump can also issue a veto) on the same before scrapping the consumer rights completely.
The US Senate lawmakers have voted to revoke a set of rules that would have made sure that ISPs needed the consumers’ consent before sharing or selling web browsing data with internet companies (read advertisers).

These rulesm which are now scrapped, were approved last year when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was under Democratic leadership. The US Senate vote was 50-48, with 50 Republicans voting in favor of eliminating broadband privacy rules.
The Senate used its power under the Congressional Review Act to void the FCC rulings and stop FCC from issuing a similar mandate in the future.
President Trump’s newly appointed FCC chairman Ajit Pai argued that the rules shouldn’t favor technology giants (Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) that have the power to collect more data than the ISPs.
“All actors in the online space should be subject to the same rules, and the federal government shouldn’t favor one set of companies over another,” FCC said in a statement.
You might be wondering about the next step. Well, The House, which also features a majority of the Republicans, would need to vote on the same. If The House and Trump agree that such regulations are useless, ISPs won’t be needing anybody’s permission to sell your data and private information.
While the broadband industry is ecstatic, calling it a way to apply privacy protections consistently, the privacy advocates are furious.
What are your thoughts on this? Become a part of the discussion and share your opinions.

C++17 Is Now Complete | Best & New Features Coming Soon To C++

The C++17 standard is now complete and this vintage programming language is expected to ship soon. This major update aims to make C++ an easier language to work with and brings powerful technical specifications. New standards are introducing new features like structured bindings and if initialisers, making this vintage programming language “feature complete”.
I
f you are fond of the relatively newer programming languages like Apple’s Swift, you might be too comfortable calling C++ a bloated programming language. To tackle such questions and improve the support for large-scale software, C++17 is expected to ship later this year.

C++17 has become a major release just like C++98 and C++11. ISO C++ standards member Herb Sutter recently shared his report from the standards meeting and told that C++17 is now complete.
The new C++ 17 standards are introducing new features like structured bindings and if initialisers, making this vintage programming language “feature complete”.
The C++ community is calling C++17 the start of a new era that will bring powerful technical specifications. The non-C++17 features will be released later as add-ons in future releases.

Here’s the list of the most notable features coming to C++:

  • C++17 is based on C11
  • Dynamic memory allocation for over-aligned data
  • Guaranteed copy elision
  • Forward process guarantees (FPG)
  • Structured bindings
  • if (init; condition) and switch (init; condition)
  • constexpr if
  • Inline variables
  • A weaker version of fixed order-of-evaluation for expressions
  • Template argument deduction for class templates
  • Addition of std::byte type
You can head over to GitHub and get the full details of the new changes coming with C++17.
I know it’s possible that many people were expecting more. But, to me, this feature list that consists of parallel algorithm libraries and fold expressions looks very impressive.
Overall, C++17 is a major update that consists of tons of smaller features that are expected to help make this language more readable.

Google Talk was shut down last week

Lastweek, news broke out regarding Google shutting down SMS support in Hangouts but it seems that may have only been half the story. Google finally published a post on their G Suite blog detailing other changes they’ll be making to Hangouts and Gmail in an attempt to streamline the services for admins and users.

Killing off SMS support in Hangouts is just the first step. Google also revealed that Google Talk will officially be put to rest — for those that refused transitioning over to Hangouts — on June 26th. Those who were still using Google Talk in Gmail will officially be transitioned over to Hangouts whether they like it or not (providing there are no “contractual commitments”). Google recommends those who prefer the look of Google Talk to try out Hangouts’ “Dense Roster” setting to get a similar experience.

For Android users, the old Google Talk app — which was replaced by Hangouts back in 2013 — will also stop functioning on June 26th and while 3rd party XMPP clients will still work on Hangouts for 1-on-1 chats, XMPP federation with third-party services will not. Anyone still hanging onto their old Google Talk Android app will need to finally update it to Hangouts (who these people are, I have no clue).

There was also some talk about a few Gmail Labs that are also retiring (Authentication Icon, Google Voice Player, Picasa previews, Pictures in chat, Quick Links, Quote Selected Text, Smartlabels, and Yelp previews). Google+ functionality in Gmail also being reduced, and you’ll no longer see the ability to email Google+ profiles or use Google+ Circles “no earlier than April 24, 2017.” For more on the changes, check out Google’s blog post below.

Should Your Computer Network Be Powered Down When Not in Use?

Most broadband Internet connections stay "always on" - keeping you online at all times. Home network owners often leave their router, broadband modems and other gear powered up and operating constantly, even when not using them for long periods of time, for the sake of convenience.
But is it really a good idea to keep home network equipment always connected? Consider the pros and cons.

Advantages of Powering Down Home Networks

  • Security: Powering off your gear when not using it improves your network security. When network devices are offline, hackers and Wi-Fi wardriverscannot target them. Other security measures like firewalls help and are necessary but not bulletproof.
  • Savings on utility bills: Powering down computers, routers and modems saves money. In some countries, the savings is low, but in other parts of the world, utility costs are significant.
  • Surge protection: Unplugging network devices prevents them from being damaged by electric power surges. Surge protectors can also prevent this kind of damage; however, surge units (particularly the inexpensive ones) cannot always protect against major power spikes like those from lightning strikes.
  • Disadvantages of Powering Down Home Networks

    • Noise reduction: Networking gear is much quieter than it was years ago before loud built-in fans were replaced with solid state cooling systems. Your senses might be adjusted to the relatively low levels of home network noise, but you might also be pleasantly surprised at the added tranquility of a residence without it.
    • Hardware reliability: Frequently power cycling a computer or other networked device can shorten its working life due to the extra stress involved. Disk drives are particularly susceptible to damage. On the other hand, high temperature also greatly reduces the lifetime of network equipment. Leaving equipment always-on very possibly causes more damage from heat than will powering it down occasionally.
    • Communication reliability: After power cycling, network connections may sometimes fail to reestablish. Special care must be taken to follow proper start-up procedures. For example, broadband modems generally should be powered on first, then other devices only later, after the modem is ready.
    • Convenience: Network devices like routers and modems may be installed on ceilings, in basements or other hard-to-reach places. You should shut down these devices gracefully, using the manufacturer-recommend procedure, rather than merely "pulling the plug." Powering down a network takes time to do properly and may seem an inconvenience at first.

      The Bottom Line

Home network gear need not be powered on and connected to the Internet at all times. All things considered, turning off your network during extended periods of non-use is a good idea. The security benefit alone makes this a worthwhile endeavor. Because computer networks can be difficult to set up initially, some people naturally fear disrupting it once working. In the long run, though, this practice will increase your confidence and peace of mind as a home network administrator.

Good News: Super Mario Run Comes To Android, Download It Right Now

After months of waiting, Nintendo has finally launched the much-awaited game Super Mario Run for the Android operating system. The game is free-to-play for the first three levels and then requires a $10 payment to unlock further levels. Interested users can download Super Mario Run from the Play Store.
Last year, Nintendo delighted the iOS users with the Super Mario Run. Now, it’s the turn for the Android users. Super Mario for Android has come out a little earlier than expected, and that could be thought as a bonus for Android users who had to wait for months. The game has been released in more than 100 countries across the world. You can check out this list on Super Mario’s website to see if your country is on the list.
Similar to its iOS counterpart, Super Mario Run for Android features three games modes, namely, World Tour, Todd Rally, and Kingdom Builder. The game is compatible with devices running Android 4.2 and above.
People can download Super Mario Run from the Play Store for free. However, the ‘free’ tag is only valid for the first three levels of the game. To unlock further levels, users need to pay $10 as a part of an in-app purchase. It is similar to what we saw when Super Mario Run arrived for iOS devices.

It’s no doubt the months following June in 2016 have brought a positive fortune for the Japanese gaming giant. First the Pokemon GO in July, which escalated Nintendo in the stock market and even compelled people to quit their jobs. And then Super Mario run for iOS in December last year. With the launch of the already famous game on the Android platform, it’s likely that Nintendo might be able to repeat their success story once again.
Download Super Mario Run from Google Play Store using this link.
